An Optometrist is qualified to examine eyes, test for , fit contact lenses and spectacles.


Our four experienced Optometrists work between the three different branches. They are:


Mr Robert A. Stokeld (Director)

BSc (Hons) MCOptom.


Robert qualified in 1981 and has spent all his professional life in private practice. He is interested in all aspects of practice, but has a special interest in the use of coloured filters for people with dyslexia. He is currently an active member of Tees Local Optical Commmittee, and is a past Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of the North Yorkshire & South Durham Association of Optometrists.

Mr Matthew Booker (Director)

BSc (Hons) MCOptom


Matthew has been part of the Henderson opticians team since graduating from University. He qualified in 2010 and is also a member of the British Contact Lens Association.


Miss Karen Knowles

BSc (Hons) MCOptom


Karen grew up in the area and qualified as an Optometrist in 2002. She enjoys working in the independent sector, and has worked at Henderson Opticians since early 2013.

Mr James M. Elder

BSc (Hons) MCOptom.


James has been a member of the Henderson Opticians team since graduating from University. He now works part time for us providing Low Vision Aids for people with visual handicaps. James is an active member of the North Yorkshire & South Durham Association of Optometrists.

All of our Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians regularly attend conferences and refresher courses to ensure their knowledge is up to date.

Dispensing Opticians
& Contact Lens Practitioner


Dispensing Opticians are professionally trained with a high level of knowledge of spectacle frame and lens designs and materials and some undergo extra qualifications to fit contact lenses.


Mr Francis A. Stephens 

FBDO (Hons) CL.


Francis has many years experience as a qualified contact lens fitter as well as a being a Dispensing Optician at our Stockton branch.


Mrs Michelle Whittaker

Michelle has been involved in the Optical world for several years now and has a lot of experience. She is now in training with the Association of British Dispensing Opticians to become a fully qualified Dispensing Optician. She is working in Practice whilst doing her training and enjoys the practical side of the work.
